Coplu is a self taught artist born in Turkey in 1958. His mother was a weaver and taught him about figures, the meanings of patterns and the emotional effectiveness of color.
He started college studying mining engineering but political turmoil in the 80's gave him the urge to draw for freedom of expression. He dropped the study of rocks to be an artist.
Coplu states, "My heart could not remain on my studying while my mind was completely occupied with political issues. I was witnessing a huge turmoil in my environment and documenting it through my art. Soon art became more important to me than the study of rocks and soil."
